The Distinguished Agricultural Alumni Award honors mid-career Purdue Agriculture graduates who have made significant contributions to their profession or society in general and have a record of outstanding accomplishments. Two Animal Sciences alumni was recognized by the College of Agriculture and the Department of Animal Sciences on March 2, 2012.
Malcolm DeKryger, MS '83, vice president and co-owner of Belstra Milling Co. in DeMotte, Ind. When DeKryger joined the company in 1991 as head of business development and sales, the pig production business consisted of 600 sows and the mill produced 36,000 tons of mixed feed per year. Under his leadership, the pork business has steadily grown to 11,500 sows with an annual production in excess of 310,000 breeding and market animals. The milling operation now produces more than 120,000 tons of mixed feed per year for pigs and dairy cows.
Dr. Gary M. Weber, BS '77 and MS '79, of Severn, Md., has been president of Bioniche Food Safety-USA, a division of Bioniche Life Sciences Inc., since 2008. Weber has provided leadership for Bioniche's efforts to license and commercialize a vaccine to reduce the shedding of E. coli for cattle in the United States by working directly with cattle producers and beef processors, Congress, regulatory agencies and the media. Weber has participated in agricultural tours of Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, Syria, Uruguay and the United Kingdom.
