Animal Sciences
Newsletter 2003
Mark Diekman, Undergraduate Programs Coordinator, is delighted to report that our undergraduate student total is nearly 400. There were 70 freshmen and an additional 15 transfers this past fall. Ninety-one students graduated during 2002.
The most popular option is the science option (270 students) with the majority specializing in Pre-Veterinary Medicine. Approximately 60 students are enrolled in the Production/Management option and 70 students are enrolled in the Agribusiness option. Enrollment has also increased slightly in the Biotechnology specialization. There are seven students enrolled in the new Behavior / Well-Being option, and several incoming freshman for fall 2003 have already indicated they will be enrolling in this option.
Nearly 90% of the Animal Sciences undergraduate students are from Indiana. Fifteen students participated in study abroad and another 12 pursued undergraduate research problems. The Department offers more than 50 courses with an annual enrollment of over 2,300 students. If you have questions or comments about undergraduate programs, contact Mark Diekman at mdiekman@purdue.edu.
New Undergraduate Scholarships
Several new undergraduate scholarships have been added due to the generosity of alumni, a former Department Head and Elanco Animal Health.
Dr. Jake Krider, former Department Head, initiated the LOUJA Undergraduate Scholarships in memory of his wife, Louise. Two, $1,000 awards are given to students with excellent communication and leadership skills. Dr. Krider recently donated six display cases for scholarship trophies, as well as faculty, departmental, team and alumni honors.
The Clarks support the Frank and Wini Clark Beef Industry Scholarship. This $1,000 award is given to an exemplary student demonstrating leadership and interest in the beef industry.
Distinguished Agriculture Alum, Larry Rueff, DVM and his wife Gail, have provided four $1,000 scholarships for potential leaders in the swine industry.
The Eric B. Luckman Award was started in memory of Eric, brother of alumnus Jeff Luckman. Jeff won the Distinguished Animal Sciences Alumni Award in 2002 (article on page 14). These two, $1,000 scholarships are available to incoming freshmen or sophomores in Animal Sciences who demonstrate potential leadership in the animal agriculture industry.
Roy Riggs, Director of Swine Products at Elanco, was responsible for initiating the new Elanco Minority Scholarship. A $1,000 award is available to a minority student with a GPA of 3.0 or greater and demonstrates strong leadership skills.
The Thrasher Family Award was initiated by Dr. George and Jean Thrasher. At least one $1,000 award is given to a first semester freshman in Animal Sciences who is ranked in the top 20% of their class and obtains a 1,000 or higher on their SAT score. This award is also open to upper class Animal Sciences students with a GPA of 2.7 or better.
The Sandy Powers Indiana Sheep Industry Leadership Award was created by generous donors who wish to remain anonymous. This $1,000 award is given to an Animal Sciences major with an interest in the sheep industry and has demonstrated leadership and academic excellence.
The Department is grateful for these new scholarships and for all donors who make scholarships available to students as they pursue their academic goals. In the future, the Department hopes to offer financial assistance to students studying abroad.
