Animal Sciences
Newsletter 2006
Greetings from Purdue Animal Sciences
In the pages that follow, I hope you are able to learn more about the people and programs in the Animal Sciences Department at Purdue University.
Animal Sciences has had another outstanding year. Some of the accomplishments of the 522 undergraduate students and 72 graduate students are highlighted. These students are excelling and finding rewarding positions in industry. The faculty and staff continue to develop outstanding programs for our students and industry stakeholders.
Among the new faces in Purdue Agriculture is Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy, our new Associate Dean and Director of Agricultural Research Programs (ARP). Sonny comes to Purdue from Kansas State University. He replaces Dr. Mark Hermodson, who was serving as the interim director of ARP following the appointment of Dr. Randy Woodson as our Dean of Agriculture.
In the past year, two new faculty members have joined the Animal Sciences Department. Dr. Darl Swartz brings a muscle protein chemistry program to Purdue from Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Scott Lake joined the faculty in November 2005, recently completed his PhD at the University of Wyoming, and will be developing a research and teaching program in beef cattle nutrition. In July 2006, we are expecting Dr. Paul Ebner to bring a new program in microbiology and pre-harvest food safety to the department from the LSU Health Sciences Center. Other faculty changes have included the departure of Dr. Mike Spurlock, who joined the faculty at Iowa State University, and the retirement of Dr. Tip Cline, who is now Professor Emeritus of Animal Sciences. Searches for four new faculty members are underway in the areas of Muscle Biology, Reproductive Physiology, Dairy Cattle Nutrient Management, and Animal Genomics. These new positions encompass research, teaching, and extension, all very important in our efforts to meet the current and future needs of our many stakeholders. The addition of new talent to our outstanding faculty is exciting for the future of Animal Sciences. Our complete faculty gallery is posted on our departmental web site (www.ansc.purdue.edu), where you can learn more about their many programs.
We continue to seek resources to grow the programs in three signature areas – Animal Growth and Developmental Biology, Animal Well-Being, and Sustainable and Efficient Production Systems – that are important to our mission. Our mission is - The Department of Animal Sciences provides leadership and inspiration to educate individuals to anticipate and effectively respond to challenges facing the global animal industries. Animal Sciences facilitates scientific research and technology transfer for efficient and sustainable production of high quality animal products with optimal animal well-being, enhancement of the human diet, and advancement of sound environmental practices. Therefore, we continue to place a high priority on providing our students with outstanding educational programs that are integrated with our programs in discovery research and extension. The academic successes we enjoy are dependent on the tremendous assistance and support we receive from our alumni and friends. On behalf of the Department of Animal Sciences, I thank each of you for your support. Your continued support is essential to our mission.
Stop in and visit with us in 2006 so we can tell you more about Purdue Animal Sciences. I hope many of you are able to join us on Saturday, September 23, 2006, for our Annual Animal Sciences Alumni & Friends Reunion. Go Boilers!
