This award is presented by the Office of the President and the Purdue University Retirees Association to the University unit that excels in fostering a strong relationship with its retirees.

The award is given in honor of Arthur G. Hansen, who served as Purdue President from 1971 to 1982. The Department of Animal Sciences was nominated by retired professors Truman Martin, Bill Baumgardt, John Forrest, Jack Long, and his wife, Bertanelle Long.

The nominators say of the department: "The Department of Animal Sciences values the contributions that retirees have made to the programs of the department in the past and appreciates significant contributions to current activities."

Youth Benefit from Workshop Focused on Animals

The Animal Sciences Workshop for Youth will be celebrating its 34th anniversary in 2006. This annual effort of the Department of Animal Sciences, the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Youth Development and Agricultural Education exposes nearly 300 students annually to the breadth of opportunities in the animal industry. High school age students from across Indiana can select from 13 species-related workshops to learn more about management of the species of their choice, careers in animal science, and Purdue University.

Another highlight of this workshop is the educational guest speakers that address the youth. Dr. Larry Nelson, former Associate Department Head, was instrumental in developing the 4-H Animal Sciences Workshop 34 years ago. After his death, his wife, Mary, established the Larry Nelson Fund to ensure excellent speakers that challenge 4-Hers to do their best and become people of integrity.

The Animal Sciences Workshop for Youth provides a valuable opportunity for students to increase their knowledge of animal management and to provide an opportunity for them to meet the outstanding faculty and staff in the Department of Animal Sciences. We look forward to continuing to prepare youth for careers and lives in the animal industry through programs such as this one.

As we strive to meet rising costs of offering programs such as this, support from the industry becomes more vital. If you are interested in providing support for the Animal Sciences Workshop for Youth, please contact Barry Delks, Colleen Brady, Clint Rusk, or Rod Allrich.
