Awards

Dr. Terry Stewart

 

Outstanding Counselor Award
Dr. Terry Stewart counsels 20 to 22 undergraduate students annually. Having served as chairman of both the curriculum committee of the College of Agriculture and the University Educational Policy Committee, and also as Chairman of the University Senate, these experiences contribute to Terry's counseling resources.


Dr. Mickey Latour

 

Outstanding Teaching Award
Dr. Mickey Latour teaches ANSC 102, Introduction to Animal Sciences; and ANSC 101V, Virtual Introduction to Animal Sciences, which has attracted enrollments from Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, and several regions of the US.


Dr. Bill Muir

 

Outstanding Graduate Education Award
Dr. Bill Muir has served as the Chair of graduate program; major advisor for 8 MS, 11 PhD, and 3 postdoctoral students; and has served on the advisory committee of 52 graduate students. Bill has taught graduate genetics and experimental research courses. He has been involved in education of international graduate students, including a short course in Nordic and Dutch Series Quantitative and Molecular Genetics.


Matt Claeys

 

Outstanding Service to Students Award
Matt Claeys provides an important service to students through teaching ANSC 370, Livestock Evaluation; ANSC 470, Livestock Judging; and ANSC 293, Special Practical Experiences in Extension Livestock Handling. Matt is also an Advisor to Block and Bridle.


Purdue Agriculture – Agricultural Research Award
The contributions of Dr. Mike Spurlock to Indiana Agriculture through research were acknowledged by naming him a recipient of the Ag Research Award. Mike developed research programs in adipocyte biology that address a role for the adipocyte as an endocrine cell and participant in immune response pathway.

Other Faculty and Staff Awards

Dr. Layi Adeola received the American Feed Industry Association Award from the Poultry Science Association.

Dr. Bud Harmon, Professor Emeritus, and Tim Ortman, ENGR '83; MBA '92, won second place in the Opportunity for Indiana Business Plan Competition hosted by Purdue in 2005 for their plan to help develop Agri Processing LLC. The firm will use a new flocculent patented by Harmon that will conserve nutrients and improve water quality from effluent of pork and other food processing plants.


Promotions

Dr. Todd Applegate, to Associate Professor; Dr. Heng-Wei Cheng, to Adjunct Associate Professor; and Dr. Mike Spurlock, to Full Professor.


Retirements and Departures

Dr. Tilford (Tip) R. Cline retired from Purdue University on August 31, 2005, after 40 years as a faculty member in the department. Tip was raised on a livestock and grain farm in West Central Illinois, and graduated with BS, MS, and PhD degrees from the University of Illinois.

Tip had a distinguished career in teaching undergraduate and graduate students throughout his 40-year career and received numerous recognitions for his teaching efforts. Upon his retirement, he received Professor Emeritus status.

Dr. Mike Spurlock resigned and left for Iowa State University in September 2005, following a short, productive career at Purdue.


New Faculty

Dr. Scott Lake

 

Dr. Scott Lake recently accepted the position of Assistant Professor in beef cattle nutrition in the department. He obtained his BS and MS in Animal Science at the University of Nevada-Reno and his PhD in Ruminant Nutrition at the University of Wyoming.

Lake's research interests focus primarily in using nutraceuticals to improve beef cattle production and efficiency. He is interested in the effects of lipid supplementation on metabolism of lactating beef cows, onset of puberty in beef heifers, and immune function in suckling beef calves.


Dr. Darl Swartz

 

Dr. Darl Swartz joined the Animal Sciences faculty as an assistant professor in the area of muscle biology/meat science. He received his BS in Food Science from Purdue, his MS in meat science and PhD in muscle biology/food science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He did postdoctoral work in muscle physiology in the School of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was an assistant and associate professor at Indiana University, School of Medicine, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. Most recently he was a visiting Scientist at the University of Kent, Department of Biosciences, Canterbury, UK. His teaching activities are in ANSC 351 and 551.



Deaths

Dr. Jake Krider, 92, passed away June 23, 2005. Jake was a professor and served as Department Head. He retired in 1979. Dr. Krider in honor of his late wife, Louise, created the LOUJA Undergraduate scholarship which recognizes two undergraduates each year for their exemplary leadership and communication skills, and the LOUJA Graduate Travel Award.

Ed Oswalt, 82, passed away at his residence in Independence, Ind. Ed was the animal caretaker in the Animal House while he worked at Purdue.


Administrative Professional, Clerical and Service Staff Honored For Years of Service

25 Years: Scot Martin. 20 Years: Denny Bayless, Donna Lofgren, Marlene Miller, Diane Patterson. 15 Years: Myron Bozell, Barry Delks, Fred Haan, Denise Stall. 10 Years: Brad Ford, Pat Jonas, Gary Wernert.
