A mouse nest traps heat

Using thermographic imaging, radio telemetry, and behavioral techniques, current work in Dr. Garner's lab is investigating the relationships between mouse nestbuilding behavior, the thermal properties of nests, mouse thermoregulation, variability in scientific outcomes, and mouse well-being. Whiskers and fur plucked from a 'barbered' mouse

Trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling) is one of the most common human disorders, affecting between 3 and 4% of women. However comparatively little is known about the disorder. Abnormal plucking behaviors are also extremely common abnormal behaviors in many species. Dr. Garner’s lab has been using ‘barbering’ (whisker and fur plucking) in mice as a model of trichotillomania. This is the only animal work currently adressing this important disorder.
