64th IBEP BULL SALE SUMMARY

A nice crowd was on hand at the Springville Feeder Auction on Saturday, October 17, for the 64th IBEP Bull Sale held in conjunction with the Springville Feeder Auction Association’s 8th annual Bred Heifer Sale. Nearly 100 buyers from Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, and Ohio registered for the combined sales.

Following the Springville Feeder Auction Association’s Bred Heifer sale, Auctioneer Daryl Ball, Ball Auction Services, Bourbon, IN, assisted by ringmen Mike Berger and Roger Dale Robinson, topped the sale at $5,000 with the second bull in the ring.

The top selling bull was Angus #48 from Kiata Farms, Hamilton, OH. Number 48 excelled in seven economically important traits. His Performance Index was 116.9 with a Carcass Merit Index of 128.7. His EPD’s ranked in the top 25% of the Angus breed for maternal milk, both direct and maternal calving ease, ribeye area and carcass fat, along with excellent $ Indexes. He was sired by CRA Bextor 872 5205 608. Kiata Farms had a second bull in the sale, #49, that sold for $3,200. Number 49 had a Performance Index of 110.2 and a Carcass Merit Index of 108.5. He was also sired by CRA Bextor 872 5205 608. The two bulls were part of the top indexing get-of-sire group.

Also selling at $3,200 was SimAngus #29 from Asperger Cattle Co., Indianapolis, IN. Number 29 was the top performance indexing SimAngus bull in the test, with a performance index of 118.5. He was sired by Schurrtop MC 2500.

Selling at $3,050 were two bulls from Bill Washburn, Olney, IL. Angus #7 was the top sale indexing bull and the first to enter the ring. He was sired by RAB-EGL Blue Moon 4407M. Angus #3 was the top performance indexing bull in the test. Number 3 had a performance index of 124.4 topping all 72 bulls on test. He was sired by Boyd Next Day 6010.

Other bulls selling well in the sale were Angus #10 at $2,750 and Angus #11 at $2,500 from Schumer Angus, St. Mary, MO; Simmental #5 at $2,550 from Bill Washburn; Angus #1 at $2,450 from Von Leer Farm, Santa Monica, CA; Angus #40 at $2,300 and Angus #38 at $2,100 from Alcoa Land, Grandview, IN; Angus #2 at $2,000 from Von Leer Farm; and Angus #36 at $2,000 from Underwood Angus Farms, North Manchester, IN. The single Gelbvieh Balancer #25 was entered by Powell Farms, Worthington, IN and sold for $1,300.

Of the 35 bulls offered, 33 sold for an average of $1,977, topping the average of last year’s fall sale by $36/bull. Twenty-nine bulls went to Indiana buyers, two went to Ohio, one to Illinois, and one to Kentucky.

On the tables below, note high-selling bulls of each breed and their consignor. Also, the number sold, average, and top for 40 auctions held at Springville, and the number sold and averages for each breed.

The 2009 Winter Performance Test will begin with delivery on Tuesday, October 27. Seedstock producers from Indiana, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin have entered bulls. Breeds represented include Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Lim-Flex, Red Angus, Simmental, and SimAngus. The 65th IBEP Bull Sale will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 6:00 pm at the Springville Feeder Auction and broadcast live via DVAuction Services.
