63-Day Newsletter, 2017 Summer Test

July 26, 2017

Attached is the 63-day summary for 68 bulls and 8 get-of-sire groups being evaluated in the 2017 Summer Test. Bulls were weighed on July 25 and their average weight was 1,038 lbs vs. 910 lbs on June 20. Bulls averaged 3.68 lbs/day growth for the 35-day period and 3.88 lbs/day for the 63 days on test. With the heat and humidity, bulls have backed off feed in the past week; some bulls have yet to shed all of their winter hair coats. Dry matter intake is 1.84% of their body weight. Health has been good. On July 25, five bulls were checked for poor gains with three treated. Two others were treated for poor gains when ultrasound scanning was done. If your bull has been checked or treated since June 20, a report is enclosed.

The 13 oldest bulls had their ultrasound scans last week. An ultrasound report is enclosed.

Thanks to those who came to help weigh the bulls. The next weigh day is August 22. In addition to weighing the bulls, preliminary structural soundness and disposition evaluations will be done by the screening committee, and bulls will be videotaped, so we can use a few extra hands that day. It would be a good time for owners to come see how their bulls are doing, and to see how the screening committee evaluates the structural soundness of your bulls. Bulls will be weighed off-test on Monday, September 25, and we can use some help then. We especially need extra help on Thursday, September 28, when we will do breeding soundness evaluations and freeze brand the sale bulls.

If you have not done so already, please get your bulls registered and send your weaning data to your breed association. The weaning data is required to process the ultrasound scan data. Final payment of $250/bull was also due. A reminder is enclosed if you have not sent the registration numbers, weaning data or payment to us.
