History of IRM

The beef-forage integrated resource management (IRM) program was funded as a Crossroads 1990 Initiative. IRM began as a pilot study in five countiees in South-Central Indiana (Clark, Crawford, Lawrence, Orange, Washington) in 1991-92, with two cooperator herds in each of the five counties.

The objective was to improve the competitiveness of Indiana's beef-forage producers and result in greater economic sustainability of these production-marketing systems. Specific goals were to:

1) Develop a record keeping system which provides necessary information, yet is simple and usable by producer clientele.

2) Identify and implement management practices in producer herds that enhance productivity and profitablity through improved fertility, health, nutrition, genetics, and marketing

3) Enhance forage production and use by implementing practices such as: improved selection of forage crops, alternative grazing procedures, harvesting systems, and forage quality evaluation.
