Progestagen Treatment (Regu-Mate®)
Chronic administration of the orally active progestagen Regu-Mate® suppresses follicular growth and estrus until it is withdrawn inducing a highly synchronized estrus.
Regu-Mate® has been fed during lactation and (or) postweaning and often increases ovulation rate and SLS (Kirkwood et al., 1986; Kirkwood & Aherne, 1988; Koutsotheodoros et al., 1998).
FDA approval for use in swine is near but:
- product cost is high and the ‘oil’ form must be mixed with the ration
- fewer NPDs than with skip-a-heat breeding
