The Future
If cost effective management techniques are developed to counter the detrimental effects of short lactation lengths on sow reproductive performance, average weaning age may continue to decrease in the US due to the potential sow and pig productivity benefits of early weaning.
However, if practical solutions cannot be found to this problem, average lactation length may stabilize around 17 to 18 d due to the biological limitations of the sows’ reproductive cycle.
