Two environmentally regulated rooms with separate but identical ventilation and flush pit manure disposal systems were used to compare reproductive and lean growth measures in gilts reared in all-in/all-out (AI/AO) or continuous (CONT) management systems. Each room contained 9 pens (1.2 x 2.0 m) with a two-hole feeder (15% CP). Three gilts were allotted per pen (.74m2/gilt). One room was operated as a conventional CONT facility (initial wt, 18 kg). To seed the room, gilts of various ages from a conventional grower-finishing unit having a history of Mycoplasma hyopneumonia were placed in the CONT room. The other room was operated as an AI/AO facility. Nine pens of gilts were moved into the room, started on trial, and slaughtered the same day. The AI/AO room was then sanitized and repopulated. Half of the gilts in each room were vaccinated (VAC) at one and 4 wk of age against Mycoplasmal hyopneumoniae. Aerial ammonia concentrations were maintained at approximately 22 ppm in both rooms. When gilts were weighing 105 kg, they were exposed to mature boars for 10 d before slaughter. At 68, 89 and 112 kg BW, fat-free lean (FFLean) was estimated by bioelectrical impedance, ultrasound or TOBEC. Two complete replications have been completed (27 gilts/trt).

Lean growth was not affected by AI/AO or vaccination at 68 and 89 kg BW but was decreased in the CONT-VAC treatment group at 112 kg BW. The use of a vaccine (RespiSure) against Mycoplasmal hyopneuomiae did not reduce lung lesions or alter production parameters, but tended to improve reproductive performance.
