Boilermaker Classic

Each fall the Block & Bridle hosts a livestock judging contest for 4-H, FFA, Junior College, and Senior College level contestants. It is held in mid-October at the ASREC Machine Shed. At this contest, participants will evaluate cattle, sheep, and swine during the morning. In the afternoon, they will come back to campus to give their prepared reasons on their class placings. Block & Bridle members serve as group leaders, lead cattle, drive hogs, stir sheep, and help in tabulation during this event.

Purdue Royal Livestock Showmanship Contest

The Purdue Royal Livestock Showmanship contest is a long standing tradition of this club. Members will show cattle, sheep, swine, and horses to compete for the title of “Champion Showman” within each individual species. No prior experience is required to be able to participate in this event. There is a novice division for members who have never showed a particular species and an advanced division for those whom are more experienced. Held in mid to late October, this is a great experience for members to work hands on with livestock animals.

Meat Sales

The annual fall fundraiser for Block & Bridle is our Holiday Ham Sale. Members sell prepackaged hams to friends, family, and faculty members to earn funds for our club.

Jr. Pork Day

Junior Pork Day is an event hosted by the Purdue Animal Science Swine Faculty. This event is typically held in March for 4-H students come to campus and participate in many activities to further their education and interest in swine. The Block & Bridle members will serve as group leaders, helpers, as well as provide lunch for the event.

Purdue Block and Bridle Judging Workout

Each spring the Block & Bridle hosts a livestock judging workout for 4-H, FFA, Junior College, and Senior College level contestants. It is held in mid-March at the ASREC Machine Shed. At this workout, participants will evaluate cattle, sheep, and swine. This is an informal event for judgers to evaluate livestock with coaches by their side and discuss the classes while viewing the animals. Block & Bridle members help lead cattle, drive hogs, and stir sheep during this event.

Tot’s Day

Tot’s day is held in April each year. Many elementary and pre-school aged children from the surrounding counties visit the ASREC Machine Shed to have hands on learning experiences with animals. The Block & Bridle provides snacks, activities, as well as helps coordinate the children’s time at the farm.

Ag Week

The Purdue University Ag Week held each April is a special event for all agriculture students. During this week, the Block & Bridle will set up a booth on Memorial Mall where we help educate our fellow students about our club and animal agriculture. The Marshall is typically in charge of facilitating an interactive game or activity while club members can help work this booth as their time allows.

Boiler Barnyard Food Sales

Purdue Ag Week is capped off by a community event called SpringFest. Thousands of people from the Lafayette area attend SpringFest to learn about student projects on campus while the highlight of many of these projects are agricultural related. The Block & Bridle club serves lemon shake-ups at this event and may occasionally set up a booth with an interactive game.

Purdue Block and Bridle Classic Hog Show

Each May the Block & Bridle hosts an Indiana Junior Swine Circuit points show at the Tipton County Fairgrounds. One of our biggest fundraisers for the year, members help with all aspects of the swine show.
